Be sure the locating pin is removed with the old phaser. Remove the old phasers if doing a lockout kit or installing new ones. I recommend using Ford OEM replacement parts or perform a phaser lockout. Ford does not sell these components in a kit. Seems like it would be a waste of time to reassemble just to find out you should have replaced something later. 5.4 Replace Timing ChainsĪt this point, it is almost always well worth it to replace all timing components. You should have a look at the lobes on your camshaft and take a peak at the rockers looking for any excessive wear. Check for excessive wear on the chain or the guides. They almost always break when removed from the block. Look for damaged seals on the back-side of the tensioner assembly.   • It also helps to make sure that once the crankshaft is in the correct position the timing marks on the cams that are in the top of the gear are R for the passenger side of the engine, and L for the driver side of the engine.
  • If chains are to be reused, mark direction of travel. Recheck to make sure the crankshaft is still in the correct position.

    If replacing phasers, you should loosen the sprocket bolts while the chain is still on. Ford does specify removing certain cam followers, but it isn't required. If engine is currently in-time, rotate the crankshaft so that the keyway is in the 11 to 12 o'clock position.
